Gamespy is shutting down!
« on: April 05, 2014, 02:24:24 PM »
Gamespy will be shutting down all services on May 31st!  It's a business decision unfortunately.  But for our Civ3 and Civ4 communities the lobbies and matchmaking services will end.

To try and mitigate the impact of this I have created two new steam groups, one for Civ3 and one for Civ4, were players can gather to organize direct IP games.  I know not everyone likes Steam, however, I believe this is the best all round solution.  Many people already have steam installed for other games. And it is free and does not take a lot of system resources for those on older systems.  I strongly suggest that players start using these chats as soon as possible in order to gain momentum and not get caught of guard when Gamespy shuts down.

Well people will have to adjust, what do you think Civ6 will use?  :-/  There are only two choices, use steam chat or give up on your favorite game :-/  And with Civ3 and Civ4 you don't have to keep Steam open all the time if you do not want too, we are just using the group chats not the built in DRM.

Did you read the links I posted? They are shutting down GS period.  I imagine they are letting all the companies off the hook for the contract fees they are paying.  But yes I did PM Dennis Shirk to ask if they have a plan of any sort.  But I can not wait to act, since I very much doubt 2K cares about Civ3 and Civ4 that are not making them any money.

If players don't own a steam game they might have to be invited to the steam chat.  It's one of Steams policies, but not hard to get around.

Me and Bantams have raised the issue with 2K in there forums.

http://forums.2k.com/showthread.php?452596-Gamespy-to-end

And I've raised a ticket (#610384) with 2K support. Realistically I don't expect solutions from them, but it would at least be nice if we can get an official response.

Thx CS and Banty, 1 question about this:

Effective January 1st, 2013, GameSpy has ceased to make its software available for Licensing. - See more at: http://www.poweredbygamespy.com/pricing/#sthash.VDcgnJ3R.dpuf

What does that mean? Can we buy the license?

Game companies like 2K could buy a license in the past, it's not something individuals do.  2K/Firaxis licensed Gamespy to provide the lobby and matchmaking for Civ3 and Civ4, when Civ5 came along they used Steam's steamworks instead.  No one can buy a license now as they are going out of business.

Don't read to much into Drcane's message, he didn't say a solution was in-progress, all he said is there will be an announcement.  I might be cynical but the announcement could just be that they are ending support for Civ3 and Civ4 :-/  I'll wait until they say they have a plan before I change my plans.

Moving old games to steam, for instance, would require a lot of coding, and they likely don't have anyone on staff anymore with Civ3 experience....they all left(and few with Civ4).  They could run there own IRC lobbies, as that is all Gamespy is, is a modified IRC system.  And likely do this with only changing a few lines of code.

But we shall see.....
