MyGameTheory : Pick and ban civs
« on: January 11, 2012, 03:32:38 PM »
Let's go for a little game theory exercice: How to optimally pick and ban civ. It was the rules for the tournament duel.

Hypothesis :
- 2 players: players A and B, let's suppose A is stronger than B.
- Ban 6 civs, pick 2. A ban first, B pick first.
- The ban process is the following : A-B-A-B-A-B.
- Civs are ranked from 1 (the best civs)  to 20 (the worst civs).

For this exercice, we are B. The question is: how do I ban civs to maximize the distance beetween the civ I will pick, and the civ A will pick ?*

There are a solution:
-Ban the 4th best civ still available for the 1st ban
-Ban the 3rd best civ still available for the 2nd ban
-Ban the 2nd best civ still available for the 3rd ban and last ban

Example 1
A ban civ 1
B ban civ 5 -> the 4th best civ that is still alive
A ban civ 2
B ban civ 6 -> the 3rd best civ that is still alive
A ban civ 3
B ban civ 7 -> the 2nd best civ that is still alive

B pick civ n°4, and A can only pick civ n°8

Example 2: A is banning randomly
A ban civ 4
B ban civ 5 -> the 4th best civ that is still alive
A ban civ 6
B ban civ 3 -> the 3rd best civ that is still alive
A ban civ 1
B ban civ 7 -> the 2nd best civ that is still alive

B pick civ n°2, and A can only pick civ n°8

Conclusion of the story : In the banning system, B should ban first AND pick first otherwise you can do that.

If B ban and pick first, A can ban such as if B pick civ number N, he can pick civ number N+1
