Proposal:

if 2 players: no pb
if 4 players: the 2 best ranked civplayers will be the captains of the 2 teams. The captain who is the less ranked will chose first his team member. The other captain select the 4th player.
if 6 players: the 2 best ranked civplayers will be the captains of the 2 teams. The captain (A) who is the less ranked will chose first his team member. The other captain (B) will chose his first team member. Then captain (A) will chose the second team member. And at last captain (B) will select the 6th player.

In short A -> B -> A -> B -> A -> B etc... where B is the player the best ranked and A the second best ranked.

Yes in the past many systems like this have been used, called Captained Teamers, I believe it is still used often in C3C.  Civ4 gave players the in game option of Random Teamers, which at the time seemed like a good idea, but in practice turned people to lazy to Captain teamers that produce a fairer game.  Random teamers lead to a lot of players quitting or trying to force a scrap when the game made totally unbalanced teams.....

Sugar I agree with you on the captaining but I feel as though it should be a "snake" draft even when picking players.  Meaning 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 for a 4 player teamer and 1 -2 -2 1 - 1 - 2 for a 6 player and if EVERYTHING works out I should be hosting 4v4's with my new computer and it would go 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 1.  Just my two cents.

in 2v2 2nd best cap picks first agree.
for 3v3 or 4v4 : in civ 3 the picking was slightly different:

2 captains as stated

then one captain (higher ranked?) makes 2 teams of the remaining players and the other captain chooses which of the 2 teams they want on their side eg .

A  and B are captains

A makes 2 teams : C and D /  E and F

B chooses E and F

Teams are:  A, C, D vs B, E, F

this way captain A must choose the fairest possible balance of remaining players as the opposition captain will get first choice.
