VANILLA

FriedrichPsitalon

This guys "invented" the civ4 combat system (paid consultant).  Nobody could touch his skillies until tommz and MGT came along.  On Case's Ladder he had a 100+ streak which was later shattered by MGT.  His clan was the Illuminati.

tommynt

The Ancient Master.  Nobody could beat this guy back in vanilla.  FriedrichPsitalon forced Firaxis to nerf india and the outside-border chops (mathematics tech) because of tommy's uber exploit.

Redphoenix

Highly skilled player whose star was overshadowed by tommy's dominance in vanilla.  He and uastranger (aka panda) was RaY's only challenge in Ren until GOD came along.  Coupled with GERMANIA, Ellestar, everybodysdarling, [GC]Nero and tommynt, nothing could stop them.  Invented Anc SS and was later popularized by Chucky Norris.

MrGameTheory

Need I say more?  ;)  ::)

WARLORDS

MookieNJ/Speaker/Metallian/Ironclad

Singly they were all very good players, but together in RaY they dominated most Renaissance games and teamers in general.  Many later era strats that exist today owe their beginnings to the RaY guys (for example, the "one front city" rule -- to this days it is considered highly noob plant more than one front city). Their equivalent today would be PPP in BtS.

Matth/Charliebrownparker/Share

The French version of the RaY team, with the ability to play and win most 3v3 events (aside from Ren).  Share and Metallian had a special rivalry.  They were also considered the boat masters.  Many did they kill with galleons in Indu and other eras.  LKT at this time was their noobish second cousins ;)

Churchill1

This guy invented the catapult stack of doom.  Soon everyone was playing his style and making 95% catapult stacks.  At the end of warlords, I gave a screenshot to Firaxis of a legendary 100-cat stack of doom built by myself, boosh, and geforced to attack GERMANIA.  The result was the overnerfing of catapults in BtS.

GEFORCED

Rapidly grew in skill by popularizing hardcore slaving and Churchill1's cat SoD.  He was the backbone of the GOD domination.

MissLadyLuck

Not truly recognized until very late in Warlords, this guy invented the 4 city slave rush one side in inland ren, thus ending RaY's domination in that era.  TheMightyBoosh still actively utilizes this technique which he has built upon and perfected.  From this point forward, MLL's star catapulted to the top.

....more to come....

PS - Need help for vanilla if any of you dinosaurs are still around.  Those days are clouded by a thick fog of noobery and forgetfullness.

I'd add two items:

Vanilla
Ironclad/Mr.GameTheory:  Give them 50-turns to build up (in Ren) and they would overwhelm you with their extreme number of cities and manufacturing.  Attack them or their teammate before 50-turns, and it was a guarenteed kill.

Warlords
Matth/Charliebrownparker/Share:  The French version of the RaY team, with the ability to play and win most 3v3 events (aside from Ren).  Share and Metallian had a special rivalry.

MGT definitely played Vanilla.  I remember him killing me when I was a nooby, which broke Friedrich's unbeaten streak on the ladder, and pretty much put an end to Friedrich playing teamers in general. :)

Well, he'll definitely take credit.  But I think it was more me, as Elizabeth, trying to build great people on the front, who broke the streak.

dunno civ brought some good players whom u could have a good time with - thats why I played and still play - but so many stop sooner or later.
Think if ellestar played on he d be named before guys like nom or mll with best game knowledge fe. He was great after 5 ladder games allready.

Or those 2 russian brother who started rus clan after some time - real funny dudes with great teamplay
I m happy u mentioned matth - he s just a great guy with real skills.

I d mention swe and zh as great alltime player.
maybe not favourites in winning a 1-1 event but when it comes down to having a good game there are no better guys

In end it comes down to clans dominating different stages mainly.

early MUD - dunno why we didnt even win more cccs - we were so strong individualy - but were not really interested in training events

MDR - just opposite - no chance on toe to toe but great teamplay

RAY - a clan formed out of total assholes (if there hdant been mokie they d proly have shit on each other on daily basis) who did nothing then playing ren all day - but well - succesful ones

now there s my black hole with XXX mainly

PPP - ccc nerds - it seems to me - they are just there when action starts and very much (too much?) concerned to win - but well thats no bad thing imo

it was more like himself breaking streak by joining ANY game not hosted by himself and being 1-1 vs the latest ladder joining noob.
I invited him 101 times to teamers - he did allways chicken and then didnt even play ccc

He played CCC 1 or 2 times, I remember the 2nd time he played vs me and I think sweviking in 2v2 rnd event, I think I killed fried like turn 30. Never saw him in civ after that. He knew the game mechanics decently well and would have made a fairly good player in teamers too, but I guess he just wanted to make a lot better image of him self than the truth was by not playing them and instead beating noobs in 1v1.

MGT definitely played vanilla, because that was the only time he ever 1x1ed with me.  He would beat me as india or inca while I played elizabeth trying to do some crazy GP strategy... it was kind of noob but I miss the zaney non military approaches to 1x1 at times . :D
