Map Checking
« on: December 14, 2009, 08:52:07 PM »
Is there any way to stop the rampant mapchecking that has ruined this league?  And more importantly, would the admins actually suspend people who were shown to be HIGHLY LIKELY to have map checked?

How are you going to prove map checking? I have never actually suspected anybody of doing this believe it or not. From my experience, it's typically a less seasoned player, accusing a veteran of doing this. For example, I was accused of map checking after I killed somebody in an Ancient SS game. They said there was no way I could have killed them if I didn't look at the map, because they had just moved their entire army out of their land 2 turns before they died. However that statement was just ridiculous since I roaded to him completely from my land to his... So I would have had to some how map check 10 turns into the future to know his army was out of his land by the time I finished my road.

If you can somehow prove map checking took place, then the admins would definitely look into it. However unless it's extremely peculiar circumstances I doubt it's anything more than a veteran player being able to read the map (knowing the positioning of certain civs/players/etc and being able to predict what is going to likely happen).

If the first GNP drops, then he just moved his stack out of his border ! This is your mapcheck !

Level 2 Advice : Turn down your tech when your 1st GNP and opponents will believe you've moved out of your land ! Fake GNP drop (slave a library at the time, and push GNP back when they come in, you'll get better GNP efficiency)

Level 3 advice : Don't do level 2 strat when you'd die anyway if they come !

More seriously = like diva, never heard of actual map check before.

I've been in games where teammates did it.

Of course It happens - It's human nature.

I'm not saying everyone, but in a league of 'strangers', I can say with 100% certainty it happens!

In a random team game there is no real solution, in a game with captains you can just set a team password and uncheck AI takeover.

Proving a map check is impossible, so suspending for it is ridiculous, no matter how conclusive the evidence seems.

Anyway it has limited power with only a single computer (or a single copy of CIV installed); which most people have.  But with two computers you could never lose!

Oh it definitely happens -- by mediocre players.  I think good players like a challenge.

It's not really possible to enforce though.

Well once I learned of certain players using a "system" to check maps constantly, I promptly deleted my ladder account.  I really can't stand cheaters and can't bear the thought of wasting my time playing games involving cheating.

If you have heard of a "system," I'm sure myself and other admins would like to hear about it in an email:  zhenon@operamail.com

Well I was told it work to check map, dont know how to do it myselfs, but I was accused to have done it once by Marak, as I killed him with chariots, well we all know who is a good target for early 8 chariots and special if he have great land...............funnyly after that Scorpio banned me from his game for 2-3 days as I map check.....ofc I never did, why we shut do it, its a fun game and it shut be interesting and fun, or?

But I nearly sure some OCC player use it, to know what tech others go and what wounder they build, thats explain why some always make right wonder and never lost liberal etc.......but ofc no prove so I just shut up.....

I'll talk to my team about using mapchecks in order to win CCC next time.
It will be very usefule, especially in later eras (no clue how we could use it in ancient)  :-*

@Penny:

Well, if Spart alone can kill your entire team while you are initially 3v2 from turn 6 on and he is playing with Marr as "support" I don't think mapchecking will help you guys in any way... ;D ;)

3v2 with one player down a town by our side, turn 6  ::)

Matter is like in Go (contrario to chess, black plays first and is the weakest player) when you play with handicap, it's the fear of black that makes white to win.

Vs you, we wouldn't have had that matter  :P
