Best sp games to play for practice in leaque MP
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:23:52 AM »
So I realize the best way to get better at league games is to play league games but are there particular sp settings that are good practice settings for league games?  The turn timer is a problem for me as well as using the city governors.  Thanks!

You can use the "LAN" setup in the "Multiplayer" menu to get the same staging room and options you have in multi, and play by yourself or against some AI. You'll be able to turn the timer down so you have the time you need, or turn it off altogether, but I'd suggest challenging yourself with the timer and work your way up. Don't worry, you'll improve your speed quickly.

You can also load saved mp games in here to check it out under more leisurely circumstances. When I first started, it was evident to me that I was not playing to the same kind of efficiency as the others. And now, it's still evident to me. ;) But I found it helpful to check out some games afterward. It's one thing to ask yourself "what happened?" during the game, but another to possibly see it or piece it together and put it into your future games.

Doing this in LAN is good for things like planting cities, worker movements, building a stack, and city screen stuff, as you mentioned, but for battling, there is no substitute for other players. If you can grab one of the vets around here and ask them show you some basics, that's likely the best jump you can get in my opinion. gl

Just play usual SP games, just use same gamespeed (fast) and maybe do timer stuff if u have big problems with timer in MP.
If u work your way up in SP you will increase your general understanding of Civ and thus also your MP results.
Of course you cant apply any tactics, but the important micro things, like worker movement, tile changing, gp management and efficient slaving are just as important in SP and you can learn a lot there as well.

ok thanks!  How would I do timer stuff in single play?  I am reasonably good at doing the things you listed when I have the time to think about them.  A decent prince player but when you throw the turn timer in..not so good.

As I have the same problem (timer, real time shortage) I cannot give advice, just
tell what I'm trying.
Try to deal with timer's issues first; they are the great enemy.
Each turn move military first, then the other stuff. Yes, that means even less
time for the domestic stuff, so make good things on time, no time to look for the
optimal; use your SP experience to the domestic stuff, and just for that.Never
automate, but do use queues to build and research when the thing gets hard.
Later, try and learn and train the interface tricks. Not so easy as they say it is!
If/when your nervous system is affected, play some SP,PBEM or non-simultaneous
turn in the middle.

is there a way to turn off the what do you want to build in this city popups but to still get a notice when a city completes something?

Also best way to use the build ques and other options I should have turned on or off?  Think I have most of the graphical ones but want to make sure.
