My troops never disband, they are killed! At least here in the ladder I'm weaker
player than you, by sure. But...if you have real time to take care of your cities:
cottages are very good if food considerations,i.e. tiles, support this move.
The more grass or flood in the radius, more probability cottages are the top
solution.
If food is unbalanced, high food resources and not so many grass, then specialists
can be better and no big point putting there 1/2 cottages, farms can help more.
And to a hills/production city, farms are also better.
As SP says let terrain be master.

Last night I had to turn one big city into "wealth" during the war to prevent disbandoning a rather nice army.  If it is a team game, be sure to share the lux goods!

Civics can also help or hurt the cost of everything.  Don't forget to build markets, courthouses, banks.  I dont know if it still applies now, but when I started playing civ, someone told me to have two good food tiles, two good hammer tiles, and the rest into cottages.  This does depend on the land around you, but it gave me an idea of what I needed for the "average" city. I started planning sites based on what I wanted out of the city.

When do you play civ?  I would enjoy a game teamed with you to discuss options.  I also have a microphone.  Try me on YIM (Yahoo Instant messenger = condor223, or on Skype = nolan26 )  The other option is on teamspeak.

Keep trying.. there is so much to balance every minute, every turn that it takes a lot of practice to become an elite player.

1.  You can research currently, and make wealth in every single city when you attack.
2.  Make sure your cities are happy (use monarchy and keep units in them for happy)
3.  If you build your cities far apart, and build too many cities, you will have very high costs
4.  If you dont have enough workers to support your cities, you will have unworked tiles (bad).
Once upon a time, there was a powerful and surprising rush.  In the end that humiliation motivated me way more than anything else could. (TMB)
